The coach of Shelbourne F.C. men’s first team – Alan Quinn – has faced a four-month suspension for all football-related activity after he was found to have violated the betting rules of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).
Several days ago, the FAI issued a statement revealing that Mr Quinn had breached the Disciplinary Regulations of betting of the country’s Football Association. Therefore, he was banned from all football-linked activities with immediate effect. As announced by the governing body for association football in the country, the violations are linked to a total of 18 games within the League of Ireland that took place from August 5th, 2022 to May 5th, 2023.
As the FAI statement reads, Alan Quinn was found to have violated Section 7.4, Regulation 3, regarding betting and gambling, of the FAI Disciplinary Regulations. The governmental body revealed that the aforementioned violations are linked to 18 League of Ireland games that took place within a nine-month period.
The sanction, involving the coach’s immediate suspension from football, was imposed by an Independent Disciplinary Committee after a personal hearing was held.
Shelbourne F.C. men’s first team coach can appeal against the Football Association of Ireland’s decision.
Alan Quinn Placed Bets on 18 Football Games from August 2022 to May 2023
The Football Association of Ireland welcomed the decision of the Independent Disciplinary Committee and shared that the recent suspension would act as a reminder to all individuals involved in football how important it was for them to comply with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations associated with gambling and betting activities.
The body further urged all individuals involved in football to make themselves acquainted with the aforementioned Disciplinary Regulations of the country’s football watchdog as set out in the FAI Governance Handbook. It also encouraged them to reach out to the Football Association of Ireland for additional information on the matter in case they needed some.
Shelbourne men’s first-team coach, in his turn, shared that he intends to appeal the severity of his four-month suspension from football. Mr Quinn shared that he was extremely disappointed at his club’s lack of support once the country’s football regulatory body made the allegations against him. Still, he said he was thankful to manager Damien Duff for his support during the investigation and after the ban was officially announced.
Alan Quinn acknowledged in full that he really violated the gambling regulations of the Football Association of Ireland but also shared that all of his actions took place in the context of what he described as gambling addiction and as a result of “a serious error of judgement” on his part. The coach also noted that he had not placed any bets against his club and explained that he had been unable to control his betting, so his judgement was impaired. He also explained that he had made all his wagers in losing accumulators and he had not generated any profit as a result of the bets.
