Videos presenting modified news stories of Nine News are still being shared on Facebook in an attempt to deceive potential users. In this particular case, a video is telling stories of a mobile gambling application that has supposedly turned a large number of people into millionaires.
As previously reported by Casino Guardian, the video has been manipulated. Whoever created it, has taken footage from a Nine News report about a ceremony held in memoriam of the late Paul Green, a rugby league coach. The footage, which was taken without permission from the national news service of the Nine Network in Australia, was first published in August 2022. The part of the original video used in the fake news clip also included some footage of a person playing a mobile gambling app, some footage of a person holding a bunch of money, as well as an interview with a popular esports player from Ukraine.
The misleading video starts with footage of Nine News presenter Davina Smith but instead of her original voice, a voiceover claiming that “more than 10,000 people” became millionaires thanks to the application, with their number growing exponentially by the day.
The original video is cut to footage of a person holding a smartphone and using what seems to be a gambling application, while the voiceover claims that one of the millionaires deposited only AU$20 which brought them the AU$25-million jackpot. Apart from that, the video shows the same player opening a phone app of the Commonwealth Bank and revealing an overall balance of AU$25,083,502.
Facebook Videos Use Nine News Footage without Permission
The voiceover of the misleading video continued to imply that new players who have the aforementioned application installed are granted bonuses. It also claims that registration is only available until the end of December 2022 and offers a download link for the application.
As mentioned above, the original Nine News video cuts to an interview with a man suggesting that he is a player referred to earlier in the clip. The footage, however, has been taken without permission from an interview with Vladimir “Noone” Minenko, a Ukrainian esports player.
The altered Nine News video features a part of a farewell ceremony that was held in memoriam of the late rugby league star Paul Green.
This is not the first time when Australian news channel videos have been edited without permission and authorisation. Two other instances occurred in December, with the first one involving a video taken from a Seven News report and the other one, using A Current Affair (ACA) report. As Casino Guardian reported in September, several misleading Facebook posts using altered Nine News reports appeared in September 2022. None of these reports, however, was genuine, with a spokesperson for the TV channel officially confirming that the Facebook videos displayed altered versions of real news reports that were previously aimed by the media hub.
