ASA Warns Betway, bwin and Coral over Misleading Promotional Ads

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA for short) has taken a stance on the issue regarding an advertisement of Betway. Back in June, a Betway customer complained that the welcome offer available at the site was misleading.

ASA conducted an investigation about the advertisement claiming that the player would receive a £30 Free Bet as soon as they place their wager. However, customers were eligible for receiving the aforementioned £30 Free Bet provided that they made a deposit.

Betway representatives said that the complaint was not completely groundless because the add did not mention the small and yet important detail that the free bet was actually a 100% matched bonus determined by the amount of the first deposit of the new customer.

However, company officials also added that the full terms and conditions of the promotion were displayed on the Promotions page. According to a statement, released by ASA, Betway Ltd was asked to clarify the promotional terms and praised bookmaker’s willingness to cooperate. Betway took actions towards resolving the issue and making sure no other misleading ad will be posted on the website.

Meanwhile, it became clear that bwin.party has encountered a similar trouble recently. ElectraWorks Ltd was accused of having published a misleading ad, according to which new customers were entitled to receiving a £30 welcome bonus. However, it has not been mentioned that the welcome bonus was actually credited to one’s account when they make a deposit of at least £10 and play through their deposit 6 times or more. “Receive Your Welcome Bonus” left the customer with the impression that the bonus would be immediately credited to the newly-established account.

Although the full terms were displayed at the Terms and Conditions page and bwin.party officials claimed that it was a common practice bonuses to be subject to a rollover requirement, ASA authorities concluded that the ad needed revision and recommended bwin.party to include the relevant information.

A few days ago, Coral also made the headlines because of a tweet posted in April this year. According to the complaint, the promotional text did not clearly state that the winnings generated from wagering on a Real Madrid – Man City derby were to be paid out in free bets.

Although Coral argued that the presence of a yellow flag headlined “New Customer Offer” implied that the winnings were to be paid out in free bets, ASA considered the tweet misleading as the aforementioned yellow flag was too small in relation to the main body of the tweet.
